Who we Serve

We specialize in serving veterans with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), polytrauma, blindness, and mental illness. Our secondary injury specialization includes visual impairments, amputations, spinal cord injuries, severe burns, and hearing impairments.

Veterans learn about Higher Ground through our relationships with military medical installations such as Bethesda, Walter Reed, Brooke Army Medical, Palo Alto, and Balboa Naval Medical. Department of Defense agencies, V.A. hospitals, veteran service organizations, and Disabled Sports USA also aid in identifying veterans who meet our requirements and need our services most.

Three year Follow-up

To ensure the sustainability of our therapy, we follow-up with our participants for at least three years, which is the longest in the industry. Our therapists make regular follow-up calls, conduct assessments, and provide on-going support and encouragement.

Upon their return home, we connect veterans with resources in their hometowns, so they can continue the sports, activities, and therapies they learned at our camps. From sports organizations and lessons to local clubs and social groups, we ensure that each veteran has every opportunity to pursue their passions. This includes providing funds for the purchase of adaptive sports equipment. We also present them with educational and vocational resources depending on their individual needs. Utilizing our extensive nationwide network of resources, it is our top priority to see every HG veteran

reintegrate into his or her home community successfully.

Our Staff

Higher Ground has an experienced team of professionals to run its programs and manage operations. Three of the staff are certified recreation therapists; many of the other staff and interns have recreation therapy training and backgrounds. Higher Ground has more than 300 volunteers, a number of whom are certified sports instructors. We also have professional physical, occupational, and psychoanalytical therapists who regularly volunteer their time.
