HG Innovation
Higher Ground continues to take a leadership role in an effort to share its research findings and best practices with military centers, universities, hospitals, and adaptive sports organizations across the nation. Our goal is to improve long-term care for wounded veterans by demonstrating the efficacy of sports, family, and coping therapies as a means of rehabilitation.
In spring 2008, we began working with Brigham Young University and San Jose State University to develop and implement research—through our programming—to measure the effects of sports, family, and coping therapies on long-term veteran care as it relates to work, school, relationships, community, health, stress, confidence, and independence.
We believe sharing the results of our research will lead to more federal, state, and private funding for rehabilitation and reintegration services for wounded veterans around the country and improve the quality of sports and recreation therapy programs offered to wounded veterans.
Our team is constantly refining the way we run Higher Ground camps to improve the impact we are making on those who attend. We offer premier programming because we set standards of excellence for ourselves. We strive to improve the quality of service we provide and the unique impact it makes. We are committed to share what we’ve learned with others to improve the industry serving wounded veterans.
Our most recent innovation is the Higher Ground Care Team initiative. This initiative will allow hundreds of citizens and dozens of businesses in Sun Valley to take part in the long-term restoration and care of wounded veterans by providing care packages, items of need, educational or vocational assistance.
Looking ahead, SVAS plans to continue its mission to develop innovative techniques and methods to care for the TBI, PTSD, and blind veteran populations. Our programs are considered by many in the military health care system, and those working in the adaptive sports industry, to be a model for therapeutic sports camp for wounded veterans.
- Our Staff
Higher Ground has an experienced team of professionals to run its programs and manage operations. Three of the staff are certified recreation therapists; many of the other staff and interns have recreation therapy training and backgrounds. Higher Ground has more than 300 volunteers, a number of whom are certified sports instructors. We also have professional physical, occupational, and psychoanalytical therapists who regularly volunteer their time.
